Obuasi, (ASH) Nov. 8, GNA – The Obuasi constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revamped its executive structure at its delegate’s congress to enable the party to reclaim the Obuasi parliamentary seat in the 2008 elections.
The party had since the 1996 elections lost the Obuasi seat to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
At the congress, the over 160 delegates elected all the 15-member executive by popular acclamation except the youth organiser position which Sampson Sarkodie polled 148 votes as against 20 collected by Muniru Seidu in an election supervised by the Obuasi Municipal Electoral Office.
Mr Francis Kofie, a retired senior staff of AngloGold Ashanti was elected chairman with another retired AngloGold staff, Nana Joseph K. Appah taking the vice chairman position.
Others were Daniel Forjoe, Secretary, Omar Farouk Issahaq, Deputy Secretary, Abdulai Dauda, Treasurer, Grace A. Aboagye, Deputy Treasurer, and John Ackah, organiser.
The rest included Kwame Adu, Deputy Organiser, Mallam Baba Shariff Sanie, propaganda secretary, Sam Danso, Deputy propaganda secretary, Georgina Baffoe, women’s organiser, Mamunatu Mohammed, Deputy women’s organiser, and Zinabu Sumaila, deputy youth organiser.
Speaking at the congress, Mr E. Nti-Fordjour, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC told the members of the party to bury all differences and get united since the suffering Ghanaians want “NDC to redeem them from bondage”.
He stressed the need for the members not to consider the congresses of the party as a time to elect new executives but rather as a period to be used to re-examine the past performance of the part and strategise for the task ahead.
“We should use our congresses and meetings to revisit our past performance and strategise for the way forward”, he said. Mr Nti-Fordjour reminded the party followers of the 2008 general elections and said “we need unity, love and togetherness for the 2008 elections.”
Mr Kofie, the new Obuasi constituency chairman who took over the late Alhaji Ocquaye promised to introduce transparency in the management of the party and also energise the constituency branches for victory in the 2008 elections.
