Obuasi: Mahama, gov’t officials attend late NADMO Deputy Director Samuel Aboagye’s funeral

President John Dramani Mahama, alongside top government officials and party executives, on Saturday joined hundreds of mourners in Obuasi to pay their final respects to the late Deputy Director General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Samuel Aboagye.

The funeral, held with full honours, drew dignitaries from across the political spectrum and traditional leaders from the Ashanti and Savannah Regions. The late Aboagye was among eight officials who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofrom on August 6, 2025.

President Mahama, who led the delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was accompanied by ministers of state, national and regional party executives, and the Mayor of Kumasi. Their presence reflected the deep sense of loss felt within the ruling party and the nation as a whole.

Also present was Chief Sulemana Jawula, the Ashanti Regional Gonja Chief and representative of Yagbonwura Jira Bikunuto Jewu Soale. Traditional authority was further represented by the arrival of the Adansi Dompoasehene, Okofo Nana Kwabena Bonsu, who offered his condolences on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Adansi traditional area.

Several political figures made their way to Obuasi for the solemn occasion. National Operations Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kojo Bamba, was in attendance, as was Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a senior NDC stalwart.

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofrom, Joseph Azumah, paid glowing tribute to the late Aboagye, describing him as an intelligent and hardworking politician whose contributions to the community and the nation were invaluable.

Former Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muaz Jibril, also shared his memories, highlighting the late Aboagye’s humility, competence, and unwavering commitment to public service.

The final rites followed an emotional vigil held the previous night, attended by family members, local officials, and sympathisers, including Obuasi East Municipal Chief Executive Adzowu Kofi William and Council of State Member Betty Mould-Iddrisu.

The late Samuel Aboagye is remembered as a dedicated public servant whose sudden death has left a profound void in both his community and the political establishment.

The funeral comes amid continued national mourning for the seven others who perished in the crash, including Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed; Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
