Accra, June 9, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), on Wednesday announced that it had removed its representative, Mr Kotomah Issahaku, from the Board of Trustees of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund).
It said the move followed a decision taken at the Central Committee’s last meeting on March 12, 2004 where a motion for his removal was tabled for making public statements that compromised the Union’s stance on the arrears owed the GETfund by Government.
Mr Issahaku was alleged to have made a statement, which suggested “the Union do not have the institutional capacity to determine the arrears and that it was making noise over nothing”.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Issahaku Ibrahim, Coordinating Secretary of NUGS, said a counter motion asked Mr Kotomah to publicly retract the said statement and to apologise publicly to the Union within seven days starting from the day of the meeting.
The statement said the National Executive Committee was subsequently mandated by the Central Committee to take action if he did not comply within the given time.
However, it said, Mr Issahaku had since that date refused to do as requested by the Central Committee of the Union even after he had been reminded of the decision and the repercussions thereof at a National Executive Committee meeting held on May 21, 2004.
“Consequently, the NEC at its meeting on June 1, 2004 unanimously voted him out of office since he could no longer represent the interest of students on the GETfund Board”.
The statement said that letters of notification were sent to the President of the Republic of Ghana, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Chairperson of the GETfund Board and the Administrator of the Fund.
