The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is pushing for a 50% base pay hike for its members as they gear up for salary talks with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

TEWU cites the rising cost of living, utility tariffs, and fuel prices as reasons for the demand, arguing that these increases have drastically reduced the purchasing power of workers’ salaries.

They demanding a 50% increase in base pay to cushion workers against economic pressures

The group says the soaring living costs, utility tariffs, and fuel prices have eroded salary values

However the Labour Minister Dr. Rashid Pelpuo acknowledges concerns and assured careful assessment of proposal

TEWU Chairperson Salamatu Mahamah Braimah emphasized the urgency, stating, “We are selling our labour, and as you know, each time things change, it means that our working conditions must change as well… I think the minimum will be 50%. So even if the government gives us 100% we will say thank you, Mr Government or Mr President and walk away.”

The union believes a substantial pay rise is necessary to restore fairness and protect workers’ livelihoods.
