A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr.Kwesi Jonah, has described the Minority members of Parliament decision to boycott the vetting of the President’s ministerial nominees as dangerous and imbalance.
‘’This decision is one that should be considered very carefully, it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you have complaints against the 2012 elections.”
According to him, the NPP MP’S have a primary responsibility of performing the duties for which the people voted for them.
“Let us not forget elected as members of parliament their primary responsibility is to those people who elected them; who voted for them. You represent the people, you don’t represent a party and the people are not necessarily those living in that constituency who are members of your party.”
Dr. Jonah further said listening to the party and not listening to the people who voted you into office is being imbalance.
He also mentioned that as a multi democracy we operate under the system of checks and balances.
“The minority should check the majority and vice versa. There are consequences if people continue to disregard the people and simple follow the instructions of their parties. We the people who elected the legislators want the minority to check the majority; we don’t want a vetting committee that is one sided.”
“Let us ask ourselves by listening to our parties are doing the work that the people elected us to do”, he lamented.
Minority members of Parliament on Tuesday in a National Executive Council meeting of the party decided to boycott the upcoming vetting of President John Mahama’s ministerial nominees expected to sit to vet the President’s nominees on Thursday.
