NPP will not disband its vigilante groups – Wontumi

Outspoken Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi has said his party will not disband its vigilante groups.

On Kumasi-based Abusua Fm on Monday, he explained that it is impossible to do so because the groups particularly Delta Force, helped the NPP win the 2016 general elections.

“How can we collapse them? I support the various groups, even in the churches they exist. That is democracy. I don’t support the idea of ending vigilante groups”. Chairman Wontumi reiterated his support for the existence of the groups.

Responding to claims by former President John Dramani Mahama that the NPP was being consumed by the monster it created in the name vigilante groups, the NPP chairman said vigilantism festered on under his watch.

“Political vigilantism is spiraling out of control and government doesn’t appear to be able to deal with the situation” adding that, the tragedy is that, most of our moral society have become passive spectators”. Ex-president Mahama stated in a facebook post.

However, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, in his interview, criticized John Mahama saying h also allowed such activities happen during his administration as president of Ghana.

According to him, the former President only found his voice in speaking to the issue after his competitors, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah have been heard on air commenting on the matter

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo – Addo has directed the security agencies to deal with members of the vigilante groups who are caught engaging in lawless acts.
