A leading member and one-time flagbearer-aspirant of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kwabena Arthur Kennedy, is advising leaders, members and supporters of his party to accept, in reality, the party’s loss of the December 2012 general elections.
He said; “with all respect to those who still insist that we (NPP) won the election but were robbed; that the first step to recapturing power will be an acknowledgement that we lost 2012”.
The above-stated pieces of advise form part of what the October 2013 issue of the Africawatch magazine quoted Dr. Arthur Kennedy as saying.
We publish below, unedited, excerpts from Dr. Arthur Kennedy’s advice to his party members and supporters through the renowned Pan-Africa magazine:
‘The fiction that we won’
As Arthur Kennedy puts it: “With all respect to those who still insist that we won the election but were robbed, the first step to recapturing power will be an acknowledgement that we lost 2012.
“When a party needs nearly four million legitimate votes to be annulled in order to win an election, that party lost that election. Furthermore clinging to the fiction that he won his election gets in the way of asking the hard questions we need to ask if we are to return to the presidency and parliamentary majority, ”Kennedy add.
What he calls “the fiction that we won” is likely, if not handled properly, to hinder the NPP from doing a thorough analysis of what went wrong in December 2012 and whether a third Akufo-Addo run in 2016 would unite or fracture the party.
But it seems that Obetsebi Lamptey is more interest in looking out for himself than in looking out for the party’s future. This perception is breeding a lot of resentment in the party against him. And chances are good that he might bow out the party’s chairmanship race to avoid embarrassment at the polls.
