Ofoase (E/R), June 7, GNA – Delegates at the New Patriotic Party(NPP) constituency congress at Ofoanse at the weekend Saturday elected Mr David Kusi-Appiah, 46, Contract Manager of the Department of Urban Roads as the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the newly created Ofoase/Ayerebi Constituency for Election 2004.
He polled 54 votes to beat Mr Kwasi Asiedu, Assistant Headmaster of Asanteman Secondary School, who had 19 votes.
Speaking at the Primaries, the General Secretary of the NPP, Mr Dan Botwe called on the people in the constituency to vote massively for the Party since it did not discriminate against any group of people in the distribution of development projects but at least would be interested in areas that it received its massive support.
He said the recent criticisms of the NPP Government over the contraction of loans would not discourage it from mobilising loans everywhere possible to support the development of the country.
Mr Botwe said the NPP Government had provided the country with more development projects within the three years that it had been in office than any Government in the history of the country. He called on the members to accept anybody who wanted to join the party.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Francis Osafo-Mensah called on the supporters of the various delegates to bury their differences and support the elected candidate to enable him to win the constituency in December.
He said the main task of the Party now was how to prepare adequately to win massively to support the Presidential elections. The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Party, Nana Adi Ankama said it was the determination of the Party to win all the 28 Parliamentary seats in the Region.
He urged the supporters of the Party not to engage in any lawlessness during and after their campaigns and the elections. The Birim North District Electoral Officer, Mr Yaw Peprah, who supervised the polls, said after the recent taking of pictures of the registered voters, it was realized that out of the 36,000 registered voters in the constituency, 2,000 of the voters did not have their photographs taken.
He, therefore, appeal to all the political parties to assist to get those affected to get their pictures taken at the District Capital, New Abirim.
Mr Peprah said in July the cameras would be made available at the electoral centres in the District for a mopping-up exercise and emphasized that during the exercise, the cameras would not be available at every polling station.
