The proposed amendments to the New Patriotic Party’s constitution are essential to strengthening its organisational structure before Ghana’s 2028 general elections, according to the chairman of the party’s Constitution Amendment Committee, Frank Davies.
Mr Davies said the changes were designed to correct omissions and unresolved issues identified after the NPP’s previous constitutional review.
He was speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The amendments are being presented to delegates as part of the first phase of the NPP’s National Delegates Congress, which is taking place alongside the election of national executives.
Mr Davies said the previous constitutional amendment process in 2025 had left some areas insufficiently addressed. The latest proposals, he added, were intended to close those gaps and improve the party’s organisational readiness for the next general election.
“Those limited constitutional amendments were necessitated by some acts of omission and commission which heralded the last amendment we had in 2025, so this is to cure the grey areas that were overlooked.
“So, a limited number of amendments will be put to the delegates today, and they are very critical amendments that will put the party into a better shape to get ourselves ready for the 2028 elections.
“It is imperative that these amendments are carried through because of the ramifications they have for our party’s organisational structure.”
Mr Davies said the amendments were not a wholesale review of the party’s constitution, but a limited set of changes aimed at resolving specific weaknesses identified following the 2025 process.
He described their approval as important to the NPP’s preparations for the 2028 general elections, stressing the effect the proposals would have on how the party is organised.
Delegates at the conference are considering the proposed constitutional changes while the party conducts its process for electing national executives.
