Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has told members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the party will win Ghana’s 2028 general elections with God’s guidance.
Speaking at the NPP conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, he called for unity within the party and urged members to support its reorganisation and flagbearer ahead of the vote.
“The Lord is with us; come 2028, we shall prevail,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin’s message came as the NPP held its National Delegates Congress and elections for national officers in Kumasi. Delegates are voting to choose the party’s next national executive committee.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a video message shown at the conference, said Ghanaians were seeking a return of the NPP and argued that the party was needed to guide the country towards prosperity and transformation.
“Ghana needs NPP to lead to prosperity and transformation,” he said.
Mr Kufuor also appealed to delegates to choose the party’s new national leadership carefully, saying the selection should focus on restoring the confidence of the Ghanaian people.
“So, even as we meet to pick our new crop of leaders, I want to appeal to all of you: let us, for now, select the national executive committee of the party on the careful examination to find out the sort of leadership that will enable us to regain the confidence of the people of Ghana,” he said.
“Let us show true respect for the idea that true sovereignty is with the people.”
Former President Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence that the NPP would return to government in 2028, with Dr Bawumia as its leader.
“With God’s guidance, we will emerge victorious as we did in 2000 and 2016 and form the government in 2028 with Dr Bawumia,” he said.
The NPP’s congress is focused on selecting a new group of national executives as the party prepares for its next electoral contest.
Delegates have also proposed and adopted a number of constitutional amendments for consideration at the congress.
