Obuasi, May 24, GNA – Mr Edward Kwasi Akuoko, an New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist has emphasized that the Party believed in the rule of law and would not initiate illegal suits against people just for political convenience.
“The NPP government would never embark on baseless law suits of witch-hunting of any sort because it upholds and respects the principle of rule of law”.
Mr Edward Kwasi Akuoko, was reacting to an alleged statement made by the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings on a Kumasi-based radio station to the effect that the government’s trial of officials of the 31st December Women’s Movement was arbitrary. She was alleged to have said that their only offence was that the movement had put up a day care centres and industries that were promoting growth and empowerment of women in the country.
Mr Akuoko, who is in-charge of Public Relations and Information Management of the Obuasi constituency, challenged the former First Lady to tell the truth instead of throwing dust into the eyes of the public. The release said the trial of some 31st December Women’s Movement over the day care centres was purely because the movement used state funds in constructing those centres and named them after the movement. It cited few of the areas like Obuasi and New Edubiase where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials used District Assembly funds meant for development projects to put up such day care centres and also placed the staff of such centres on the assemblies payroll. It said there were other instances where the movement used state interest to secure facilities, which were never used for the intended purposes.
“Nana Konadu should therefore tell Ghanaians the real truth for their prosecution and stop creating the impression that they are being tried for no offence committed”, the release added.
