NPP accuses EC of dilly-dallying over voters’ register petition

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) appears to be trifling with a petition it submitted over the current voters’ register.

According to the NPP, after the petition was submitted in August, it took the state’s election-organising body two months to reply.

Speaking after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party on Tuesday, November 3, Nana Akomea, the Communications Director of the NPP, said
even the reply of the EC does not speak directly to the content of the petition.

“At the next Steering Committee meeting, they will have a look into it,” Nana Akomea said about EC’s response, which he said the party was officially informed about at Tuesday’s NEC meeting.

The Chairperson of the EC at a two-day stakeholders’ forum on the voters’ register had accused the NPP of shifting the goal post anytime it gets ready to respond to the petition.

“We have responded but maybe not in a way that they liked,” Charlotte Osei said at the forum.

But that may not have gone down well with the NPP.

“We expect that [the petition] has to be treated with a bit of more urgency,” Nana Akomea told journalists.

He contended that a petition on the electoral roll from a major political party should not be trifled with like the way it seems to have been.

A five-member committee set up by the EC is collating proposals on the way forward as regards the register and is expected to submit its report to the EC for a final decision.
