Notorious armed robber arrested

Tema, Nov. 14, GNA- A combined team of Tema and Aflao police have arrested a 33-year-old man described by the police as a “notorious” armed robber who is involved in series of armed robberies in the Greater Accra Region.

John Amewugah, who was arrested at the Aflao-Agbozume road on November 9, 2003, following an intensive search for him.

ACP Agnes Sikanartey, Tema Regional Commander of Police told pressmen on Friday that on November 7, police had information that a notorious armed robber had snatched a car from its owner in Tema and had sent it to Aflao to dispose of it.

She said the information was sent to Aflao police, followed by the deployment of plainclothes policemen to the area and that after two days of intensive search, the suspect and his driver were intercepted on the Aflao-Agbozume road.

The Tema Police Regional Commander said during interrogation, Amewugah told the police that he hired the services of Paul Musah Mohammed, the driver, at Aflao.

Amewugah allegedly admitted to police interrogators that some years ago, he was involved in a robbery case at Katamanso in which the son of the Katamanso chief, Nii Laryea, was killed in a shoot-out along the Katamanso-Ashaiman road.

The suspect claimed he was put before court and remanded into prison custody for three and half years, and granted bail about six months ago. ACP Sikanartey said Amewugah further confessed that while in prison custody, he came across one Sarfo also a robber, who joined him to snatch an Opel Kadet car at community nine, which they sold at four million cedis.

She said Amewugah again told the police how he and six others hatched a robbery plan at Teshie Nungua Estate, in which 94 million cedis was taken away from the Ghana Telecom offices in broad day light.
