Accra, May 12, 2000 GNA – The National Executive Council (NEC), the highest governing body of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said that for five consecutive years the Ghana Education Service had not been able to conclude negotiations with the union on its Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The NEC said this is in disregards to efforts in getting the GES to the negotiating table and “the numerous complains we have filed with the National Labour Commission on the GES Management’s unco-operative attitude”.
In a resolution released in Accra on Friday, it said if by the close of work on Monday, May 29, 2006, the GES management has “not make it possible for negotiation to be concluded and other outstanding issues resolved, we shall deem it fit to advise ourselves.”
Mr. Dan Antwi, General Secretary of TEWU, told the Ghana News Agency that since the time Professor Ameyaw Akumfi was the Minister of Education the leadership of the union had been called upon to persuade its membership to rescind decisions that might lead to industrial strike action.
As a result, the Minister and succeeding Ministers entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, all geared towards the promise to conclude the CBA but this had come to naught, Mr. Antwi added.
