Until Ghanaians living in Accra stop dropping waste into the Korle Lagoon, major parts of the capital city will continue to experience flood disaster, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Klottey Korley constituency has said.
According to her, when drains are choked with plastic and other waste materials, it is only logical that there will be flooding any time it rained since free-flow of water is curtailed.
“People cannot just drop waste in the nearby Korle Lagoon and expect disaster-free rains,” she said during the National Sanitation Day at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle exercise over the weekend.
“I am, therefore, here to join people in the constituency to desilt choked gutters and clean the environment to show the way that disasters are preventable,” Dr Rawlings added.
The daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings noted that her involvement in the clean-up exercise demonstrated the appreciation she has for the effects of sanitation-related diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhoea.
“As a medical doctor, I am also aware of the effects of malaria and water borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea on the people,” she said.
