The Volta River Authority has assured there will be no power cuts from Wednesday, December 5, 2012 till election results are declared.
The assurance comes in the wake of the load shedding exercise regime currently being managed by the Electricity Corporation of Ghana and its allied agencies.
Many Ghanaians have expressed worry over the power outages and have expressed fears the situation could be exploited during counting of ballots after voting on Friday.
The opposition New Patriotic Party is already raising red flags over what it says are plots to rig the December 7 elections, including a nationwide power outage.
But the VRA, the generator and supplier of electricity in Ghana has assured there will be no power outages during the election period.
At a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, Kweku Awotwe said they have put in adequate measures to ensure there are no power cuts throughout the period.
Joy News’ Manasseh Azure Awuni, who was at the meeting said the VRA has a reserve of 150 megawatts and will rely on that for stable power supply.
In addition to that, the Authority will also cut down electricity supplies to neighbouring Togo in order to shore up supplies for the period during election.
The VRA is also in talks with Ivory Coast for a supply of power to Ghana. A delegation is in Ivory Coast over the matter.
