Nkoranza South Assembly to motivate local teachers

The executive committee of Nkoranza South Assembly has called on the Assembly to institute an awards programme to honour and motivate deserving teachers and workers during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The committee also advised the district director of education to adopt a mechanism to check school children who abandon the classrooms to engage in commercial activities on Tuesdays, the main market day in Nkoranza.

To ensure a successful award programme, the committee asked the Assembly to set up a five-member committee within its education and social sub-committee, to scrutinize and vet students and other applicants for bursaries and scholarships.

The executive committee said such exercise would enable the Assembly to identify the deserving beneficiaries of the Assembly’s scholarship scheme.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, District Chief Executive, announced these at the weekend whilst presenting the Executive Committee’s report of the Assembly to members at a sessional meeting at Nkoranza.

He said the committee expressed concern about the lack of accommodation for teachers in deprived communities and advised the Assembly to negotiate with investors, philanthropists and other voluntary associations and individuals, to help construct teachers’ bungalows in those communities.

The committee also appealed to the district environmental health officer to check stray animals from causing nuisance in the communities and to ensure that residents keep their surroundings clean.

The need for the Town and Country Planning Department to create the proper lay-outs of all communities to create avenues for proper development of housing facilities was stressed by the committee, which also called on the Assembly to develop the waterfalls at Dandwa as a tourist centre.

Meanwhile, the Nkoranza South District Assembly in collaboration with Nkoranza Traditional Council will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Newmont Gold Ghana Limited for the mining of gold in the district.**
