Nkonya/Alavanyo conflict: Group urges Mahama to investigate REGSEC

A group calling itself the ‘Coalition of Orphans, Widows and Victims of Nkonya-Alavanyo Conflict’ has appealed to President John Mahama to institute an investigation into the activities of the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

According to the group, some of the decisions of the Council in handling the protracted Alavanyo-Nkonya communal conflict are suspicious.

At a press conference at Nkonya, Wednesday, the group alleged that the REGSEC since September 2013 has been hampering efforts by an NGO , ‘Youth for Peace and Security Africa’ , which has been trying to broker peace between the feuding parties.

Its Spokesperson, Cosmos Sarpong, said they believe some individuals are profiteering from the conflict hence the lukewarm attitude of some of the stakeholders in finding a lasting solution.

The group also questioned the essence of the 14 hour curfew, which they said only “exposes us to more danger, poverty, harassment and economic hardship,” as shootings continue in the area especially during the curfew hours.
