Nigerian remanded in police custody for allegedly causing harm

Accra, Sept. 3, GNA – A Nigerian trader, Devine Ekwee, was on Friday remanded into police custody for allegedly stabbing a colleague in the neck and ribs over a woman.

Charged with causing harm, Ekwee pleaded not guilty.

He would re-appear on September 16.

Police Chief Inspector Charles Chester, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mrs Patience Mills-Tetteh that Ekwee and the complainant, Edwin Ayabolo, who is stilling receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, are traders.

He said the complainant Ayabolo resides at Banana Inn and the accused, Ekwee, resides at Cowlane, all in Accra.

Chief Inspector Chester said the accused and complainant had been at loggerheads over an accusation that the accused person was befriending the complainant’s girlfriend.

On August 13, this year, the prosecutor said complainant visited his girlfriend at Akuma Village near the Community Centre, Accra, and the accused on seeing the complainant started a quarrel with him.

Chief Inspector Chester said during the quarrel, accused removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed complainant in the neck, ribs and threw the knife onto the premises of Odartey Lamptey Preparatory and Junior High School.

He said after the incident, the accused took to his heels but was arrested and escorted to the Ministries Police Station while the complainant was rushed to the Ridge Hospital.

The prosecutor said complainant was later transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
