NGO supports women’s groups

Tamale, Sept. 22, GNA- The Behisun Development Organisation, a Tamale-based NGO has supported women’s groups with 20 million cedis to undertake income-generating activities.

The beneficiaries from the Sangani, Kalpohin, Salamba and Nanshegu communities in the Tamale Metropolis, and consisting of 12 women in each group, would receive 200,000 cedis per woman to undertake ventures such as shea butter extraction and groundnut oil production. Mr Ahmed Issah, chairman of the NGO disclosed this to the GNA in an interview in Tamale on Thursday.

He said the NGO had also supported the communities to cultivate about 20 acres of different species of economic trees to enable them to generate income to provide social facilities to their areas. He said the people were now engaged in tree planting, following a campaign carried out in the communities on the importance of tree planting to protect the environment.

“Our NGO only facilitates activities of groups to enable them to take ownership of projects we initiate,” he said, and appealed for assistance from donor agencies or other development partners to sustain the activities of the NGO.

Mr. Issah said the Behisun Development Organisation was also trying to link up school children in Ghana with their counterparts abroad through the “Pen Pal Fan Club” to establish friendships and cultural exchanges to help promote global peace and understanding. He said so far, about 50 pupils in the Tamale Metropolis had registered to be linked up with other pupils abroad.
