NGO sensitises public on water bodies

Kumasi, Sept. 9, GNA- Mr Patrick Oppong, Director of Save Our Waters Ghana (SOWG), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has reminded Ghanaians of the need to protect water bodies to ensure the uninterrupted supply of potable drinking water in all communities. He said the protection of the ecosystem around river catchment areas is directly essential since it is closely linked with good health and favourable climatic conditions.

“To protect water bodies from pollution and degradation is also to ensure good rainfall patterns and the health of the people since most diseases are water borne”, he said.

Mr Oppong, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi at the weekend, called on all Ghanaians to assist in the fight against the degradation of vegetations around the catchments area. He further cautioned people living along the tributaries of rivers Offin and Owabi not to dump refuse and human waste into the rivers since it moves downstream to the Owabi and Barekese dams, which are the main sources of drinking water for people living in Kumasi and surrounding areas.

Touching on the achievements of SOWG, which is only five months ago, Mr Oppong said the organisation has planted 2,000 teak trees along the Akosu, Nkaadan, Benkumfour and Acheamponghene all tributaries of River Offin and Owabi. 09 Sept. 06
