Apam (C/R), Dec 30, GNA – Bright Hope for Tomorrow, a local non-governmental organization, in conjunction with the Gomoa West District Assembly, has feted about 500 children during the Christmas festivities at Apam. Ewurabena Koomson, the Executive Director of the NGO, said the gesture was to bring some joy to children whose parents were unable to provide meal= s prepared with chicken and soft drinks for them. Ewurabena Koomson commended the Assembly for supporting the organization to make the programme a reality.
Miss Grace Okoe Santana, a former Assembly member for Alata-Akobirem Electoral Area of Apam and the Secretary to the NGO, appealed to the children to remember that they had not been forgotten even though their parents could not provide them such meals. Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, the Gomoa West District Chief Executive, said the government was doing everything possible to ensure that every Ghanaian child had access to education. He said the government supplied 2,500 needy children in the District with free uniforms last academic year and 4,300 uniforms had been taken delivery of to be supplied to children this academic year. Also, efforts are being made to extend the School Feeding Programme to cater for more children in the District. Mr Aidoo-Mensah urged the children to take advantage of the government’s interventions and stay in school and to develop their talent= s. “The fact that your parents are poor does not mean you must become vagabonds,” he said and added that the Assembly had enacted a bye-law to detain school-going children who were found outside school during school hours. He commended the NGO and said the Assembly was prepared to help individuals and organizations who promote the development of the Gomoa District.
