New Police Post for Abeka Lapaz

Accra, March 11, GNA- The Greater-Accra Regional Police Command on Thursday opened a new Police Post to cater for the Abeka Lapaz area in the Greater-Accra Region.

The post would serve to mitigate the pressure on the Tesano Police station, which is far from residents of the area.

Mr Kofi Boakye, Greater-Accra Regional Police Commander who performed the opening ceremony said the initiative was part of efforts to bring policing to the doorstep of residents of the area. He said the post would help curb the crime wave in the area, but cautioned officers to desist from extorting money from the public in order to bend the law.

He said the police administration would not spare any officer who misconducted himself to bring the name of the institution into disrepute.

Mr Boakye who is also an Assistant Commissioner of Police said since the Abeka Lapaz area was a crime prone area, the police would make the area one of its operational points.

He called on the residents to assist the police in maintaining law and order in the area, by forming Neighbourhood Watchdog Committees. Mr Boakye noted that although armed robbery had declined considerably in the capital, car snatching had become the latest crime at an alarming rate.

He disclosed that 92 car jacking incidents had been recorded this year, adding that most of these cars were commercial vehicles snatched from spare drivers who might probably had connived with the car jackers to rob them.

He warned the youth of the area against taking the law into their own hands to vandalise police stations saying, that negative acts would be dealt with severely.

On the relations with drivers, he advised that they should not feel harassed when approached by the police but rather report to the regional headquarters any officer who demanded money from them. On the upcoming general elections the Regional Commander asked journalists to cross check their facts before going into print, adding that they should not allow themselves to be used to inflame passions which could bring unrest into the country.
