Apam (C/R), Aug 27, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not employ any dubious means such as lies and deceit to win power, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the Party’s Flag Bearer has said. Addressing separate rallies at Apam, Mumford and Dago as part of his campaign tour of the Central Region, Prof Mills pointed out that any political party which gained power through dubious means would be doing a disservice to the nation because lies and deceits would not allow the electorate to make informed choices.
Prof Mills advised the electorate to reject politicians who promised them the “moon” when they (electorate) know they could not produce even the star.
“The destiny of the nation is in the hands of the electorate, your vote could make or retard its progress,” Prof Mills stated. Good governance is about improving the living conditions of the people, so any government which has made situation worse for the people than it came to meet, should not be given another chance, he reiterated. Prof Mills said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government failed to get the nation’s priority right, adding that it spent resources on projects which did not have immediate bearing on the living conditions of the people at the time of hardships.
He mentioned the building of a new presidential palace and the government’s plans to acquire two planes as projects which could have waited and the money used to provide water or cushion the hardships facing the people.
Prof Mills said when elected, his administration would make drug trafficking a more risky venture to deter people from engaging in it. He assured the youth that the National Youth Employment Programme would not be abolished by his government but rather the system would be improved to ensure regular payment of enhanced salary. Prof Mills reassured that the NDC would ensure peaceful elections and appealed to the NPP, the Electoral Commission and the media to create a levelled-playing field for all political parties and conduct their activities in fair and transparent manner.
Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe, NDC National Women Organiser, called on President John Agyekum Kufuor to ensure that the peace the former President Jerry Rawlings bequeathed to him in January 2001 was sustained.
Mr Francis Arthur, NDC Parliamentary hopeful for Gomoa West was introduced to the people.
