The National Women’s Organiser for the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madam Ama Benyiwa-Doe, has expressed optimism that her party is now determined to win 40% of Ashanti votes in the forthcoming general elections.
“We are now hopeful to win 40% of Ashanti votes and break the perception that Ashanti region is a ‘no go’ area for NDC.
At times we make mistakes, sit in Accra and relax thinking that Ashanti region is stronghold of NPP but that is not the situation on the ground, she observed. She said the people are disappointed in the NPP government led by President J. A. Kufuor. The National Women’s Organizer who is also the former MP for Gomoa West Constituency said this in an exclusive interview with the Daily Dispatch newspaper at Edwenase Rehabilitation Centre in Kumasi after she had addressed hundreds of NDC supporters at Kwadaso.
Madam Ama Benyiwa-Doe was among the national executives who stormed the region to assess the state of NDC, problems, challenges facing the party and help map strategies to enable them win the 2008 polls. Their one week tour was also aimed at assessing the structures of NDC, and meet with the foot soldiers, particularly constituency executives and rekindle their support for the growth of the party. Madam Benyiwa Doe observed “we are very happy about the kind of reception and massive support we enjoyed during our visit.
According to the NDC’s Women Organizer, most of the people who voted for NPP are now disappointed because the government has not been able to fulfill its numerous promises to them. The people are talking about what is threatening their living standard such as high cost of living, intimidation, and the recent killings which have bedeviled the country. Madam Benyiwa-Doe noted that NPP has no good message to the people, hence their continued claim that NDC is a violent party. It is high time the young generation compared the performance of NDC’s eight-year rule and that of the NPP and vote for a party that can help improve their lot.
