Sunyani, Sept. 5, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Brong Ahafo has appealed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to spare the NDC and its leaders, especially Former President Jerry John Rawlings, the ordeal of insults and attacks.
It said the tendency of the NPP to treat its political opponents like a conquered and subjugated people from whom a punitive price ought to be exacted would be fiercely resisted within the confines of the Constitution and the law, the Brong Ahafo Regional NDC said in a statement.
The statement, signed by Mr Mohammed Kwaku Doku, Regional Secretary, noted that, a recent publication by the ‘Statesman’ newspaper regarding the purported recruitment of mercenaries from Liberia by elements within the NDC, in collaboration with certain allies within the West Africa Sub-Region to topple the NPP Government was a cover-up by the Government to sway people’s attention from the hardships they were going through.
“The Brong Ahafo NDC is particularly concerned about the NPP’s rush to resort to character assassination, insults and the castigation of innocent people instead of getting to the bottom of this serious matter to bring the perpetrators, if any, to book”, it said.
The Brong Ahafo NDC said it wished to re-enforce the call by the Party’s National Secretariat to demand from Parliament and all advocacy groups for the sustenance of democracy and good governance, to conduct thorough and impartial investigations into the coup scare.
It called on the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to use their institutional apparatus to call the NPP Government to order and thereby save innocent and respectable personalities in the Sub-Region, from being used as scapegoats to cover up its incompetence, the statement said.
