NCCE to boost voter education ahead of polls

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is increasing voter education on the coming general election to ensure citizens are well sensitized.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Commission, Mr. Alhassan Yakubu, said they were combining house-to-house visits, organization of workshops, radio and focus discussions and durbars, to assist the people to have better understanding of the electoral laws.

He pointed out that it was by so doing that all could be expected to play by the rules of the game. He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the NCCE was determined to go to every length to overcome voter apathy and remove needless tension ahead of the polls.

He expressed discomfort with the huge number of spoiled and rejected ballots seen in every election and said it would work with all stakeholders to deal with that.

This, he noted, was important because that had the potential to push the election into a run off as happened in the 2012 polls.

He appealed for increased support for the NCCE to carry through its planned activities.

Mr. Yakubu made reference to the impressive turnout during the just limited voters’ registration exercise in Kumasi and said this was largely due to the house-to-house education it embarked on in parts of the metropolis including Ayeduase, Patasi, Sofoline and Suame.

He condemned the violent incidents at some of the registration centres and pledged to engage the political parties, the security agencies and other stakeholders to make the presidential and parliamentary elections trouble-free.
