The opposition new Patriotic Party has described as baseless claims by the General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress that they must be blamed for the Nayele Ametefe cocaine scandal that rocked the nation.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, at a media encounter Wednesday alleged that it was under the erstwhile NPP administration that the convict was introduced to the cocaine business, and the party must be held responsible for the act, which led to her incarceration.
Ametefe, 32, was handed an eight-year jail sentence by a UK Court for drug trafficking on January 6, 2015.
She had hidden 12 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage to the UK and was arrested at Heathrow Airport on November 10, 2014.
She is suspected to have used the VVIP section of the Kotoka International Airport prior to her trip.
Speaking to Citi FM, the communications director of the NPP Nana Akomea said the ruling party has still failed to respond to the most relevant matters being raised by the opposition over the rest.
“The fundamental questions that we asked in our press statement have not been answered and they still remain.
“Instead, baseless accusations have been made against the NPP by Asiedu Nketia,” Akomea stated.
According to him, accusation that the NPP was behind media reports that Ametefe used the VVIP section of the Kotoka International Airport while traveling to the UK is untrue.
“The NPP has never in any official statement accused Nayele of traveling [with a] diplomatic passport. The party also heard such claims in local and international reports like many other Ghanaians”.
