National service personnel collect allowances

Accra, Sept. 15, GNA – Hundreds of national service personnel from the Greater Accra Region who have completed their service have begun collecting their allowances for July and August that had been delayed. Speaking to the Ghana New Agency in an interview Mr Kwame Fosu Agyen, Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinator, said the allowances could not be paid early because of technical reasons.

He said payment began on September 13 and gave the assurance that measures would be put in place to ensure it went on smoothly. Mr Agyen said the region had a large number of national service personnel and the secretariat would have to always prepare vouchers early for the Audit Service to vet.

He said the problem of personnel had always been accommodation, especially for those posted to remote rural areas. He, however, urged personnel to accept such postings because when they went to villages and towns outside their regions they learned from the people and understood them better. Mr Agyen said the regional office was in close contact with municipal and district assemblies to assist service personnel so that they did not have many problems. He said the National Service Scheme was playing a lead role in the decentralisation process because it served to beef up the human resources that were lacking in such areas. Mr Agyen appealed to service personnel to have a positive attitude towards the scheme because it was mandatory for everyone who is 18 years and above.
