National Peace Council holds workshop for journalists

Mr Francis Azuimah, Executive Secretary of National Peace Council (NPC), has expressed the need for the citizenry to let the laws be applied firmly in all matters to resolve conflicts in the country.

Mr Azuimah, who was speaking at a two-day workshop on peace communication for journalists in Tamale, stated that peace would be promoted if the laws of the country are allowed to work.

As part of the workshop, participants, who were drawn from Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, undertook a field visit to communities in Tamale and interacted with people and businesses about their projections of the future and how peaceful coexistence could impact on those projections.

Mr Azuimah said numerous cases of interference in the work of the security services by some influential members of the public to release people from lawful custody are inimical to efforts at promoting national peace.

He said “where there is no truth, there will be no peace” hence the need for justice to be served in all cases.

He said conflicts must not be linked to politics, while perpetrators must not be shielded against sanctions to deter others.

He advised journalists to be circumspect in their reportage in conflict situations in order not to inflame passion or pitch groups against each other, to exacerbate the situation.

Reverend Father Thaddius Kuusah, Northern Regional Secretary of the NPC urged journalists to ensure that their work contribute to the common good of the society.
