National Constitutional Forum to review 1992 constitution

The National Governance Workshop (NGW VIII) for 2006 shall be devoted to critical analysis of commentaries, reviews and discussions on the workings of the 1992 4th Republican Constitution of Ghana. It will focus mainly on the activities and material that came out on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the 1992 Constitution in 2002.

Under the theme “We the people of Ghana: Understanding and Living the Constitution at the dawn of 50”and with Parliament as the lead institution, NGW VIII will seek to concretise debate about the impact of the structure and content of the Constitution on the practice of democracy in the country. In particular, NGW VIII will help to synthesis opinion on certain aspects of the Constitution that are most subject to diverse public perceptions including relations between governance institutions, institutional growth, transparency and the enhancement of social and economic rights.

The first two NGW VIII fora were held last year in Accra and Kumasi for the Southern Zone and middle belt respectively, and are now going on to the final one in Tamale on the 2nd November 2006.

Since 1997, the National Governance Programme (NGP) has produced the NGW annually as a public platform for conducting broad based dialogue on critical governance issues, with a view to sharing information, enhancing public participation in the policy process and building consensus.
