Ghanaian Highlife musician Nana Asamoah has released a five-part project that retells one story in Twi, Ga, Ewe, Hausa and Yoruba, using music to explore how social media has changed everyday conversation.
Named Social Media Konkonsa, the collection examines the constant gossip, rumours and unsolicited opinions that circulate online. Its central idea comes from “konkonsa”, a Ghanaian expression commonly used to describe that kind of commentary.
Rather than translating one song word for word, Nana Asamoah has adapted each version to reflect the language’s own style, humour, expressions and storytelling traditions. The result is five interpretations of the same subject, each shaped by a different cultural setting.
The tracks are titled:
– Twi: Social Media Konkonsa
– Ga: Social Media Sabelor
– Ewe: Social Media Sakplito
– Hausa: Social Media Gulma
– Yoruba: Social Media Olofofo
Three of the languages – Twi, Ga and Ewe – represent Ghana’s linguistic heritage. The Hausa and Yoruba versions extend the project’s reach across West Africa, particularly towards audiences in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The release places a modern subject within Highlife’s established storytelling tradition. Although social media gossip and online commentary are contemporary themes, Nana Asamoah uses the genre’s familiar narrative approach to examine how people communicate and share opinions in daily life.
At the same time, the project reflects the musician’s interest in connecting listeners across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Telling one story in five languages gives audiences different ways into the material while preserving the song’s central message.
The collection also presents Highlife as a genre capable of developing with changing social habits without losing its identity. Its traditional narrative character remains at the heart of the project, while the subject matter is drawn from a platform that has become part of modern life.
The complete five-part collection is available on major digital streaming platforms. Visuals accompanying the project are being released through Nana Asamoah’s official social media pages and YouTube channel.
