Nakpanduri youth shot police officer

Tamale, March 25, GNA – A police officer was shot and wounded when so= me youths of Nakpanduri in the Bunkrugu/Yonyo District embarked on a protest= on Tuesday night against the interception of a vehicle suspected to be carry= ing weapons to the area.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Angwubutoge Awuni, Northern Regional Police Commander, told the media in Tamale on Wednesday that the=

police had intelligence information that the bus with registration number=

AS285F which left Kumasi for Bunkrugu, was carrying weapons so the police= in Nakpanduri intercepted the vehicle for inspection.

He said at about 2300 hours the youth mobbed-up and attacked the Bunkpurugu police station, shooting indiscriminately and wounding one of the police officers whose condition is said to be stable. He said the police had been able to arrest people in connection with t= he offence and would deal with them in accordance to the law saying, “No amo= unt of interference would stop the police from performing its legitimate duti= es”.

The Regional Commander urged the public not to be afraid because the security situation in the region was safe and that the police was on top of the situation.

In a related development, the police have arrested Sofo Alhassan, 27,=

who allegedly murdered his step mother at Yendi on Monday, and he would s= oon be put before court for prosecution.
