The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is scheduled to hold a colloquium on Friday, August 29 to discuss ways to improve the standard of education in the country.
The colloquium is expected to assemble all stakeholders including the Ministry of Education.
Speaking to TV3 on Thursday, August 28, Christian Addai-Opoku, the National President of NAGRAT, hinted that the colloquium is expected to make inputs on government’s submission to the United Nations over the next goals that will be set after the expiry of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
“As the world is moving towards another development goals, we are advocating that quality must be the bedrock of any goal that will be set for education,” he said.
Mr Addai-Opoku disclosed that a resolution after Friday’s colloquium will be presented to the UN at a meeting to be held in September, this year.
“The UN will set targets for all the countries in the world as they did to the existing goals. When those targets are set, then they will impress upon state governments to be able to channel resources to meet them.”
He bemoaned the falling standards of education in the country though he admitted it is a reflection of investment government puts into the sector.
“We all claim that about 23 per cent to 25 per cent of our budgetary allocation goes into education but the question is has it been enough?” he queried.
“If you look at infrastructure in our schools, personnel and so on, we are still lagging behind,” he observed.
