NADMO identifies 270 flood prone areas in WR

Sekondi, May 30, GNA- The Western Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has identified 270 flood prone areas in the region with 17 in the Sekondi-Takoradi- Shama area. As a result, the NADMO office has taken stringent measures to ensure that the populace suffer during the rainy season, Mr. Japhet Baidoo, Western Regional Coordinator of the NADMO told the GNA in an interview in Takoradi. He said among the measures are constant cleaning exercise especially, desilting of gutters and drains and the intensification of public education for those living in the flood prone areas to take adequate precautionary measures among others.

The Coordinator however appealed to the public to supplement government efforts in preventing unfortunate situation by cleaning their surroundings. He said clean-up exercises involved a lot of logistics and called on the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to always release tools for the exercise.

Assembly members must also lead in the crusade to embark on communal labour to ensure environmental cleanliness adding, the president’s cleaning programme would remain a mirage if the people continue to show laxity. Mr. Baiddo said in the Shama district, settlers at Krobo, Bosomeda and others, which are flood prone along the coast, have heeded to the advice to relocate to Fawomanye, a safer ground.

The Coordinator however, noted that the persistent floods were due to the narrowness of gutters and drains and called for the monitoring of projects by experts to ensure that projects are undertaken according to the specifications to prolong their lifespan. Meanwhile, the continuous rainfall in the metropolis have resulted in the uprooting of trees and the destruction of food crops in residents’ backyard gardens while parts of the streets are under water. 30 May 10
