Kumasi, Dec. 6, GNA – Dr Rabiatu Ammah, National President of Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations of Ghana (FOMWAG), has appealed to all Muslims to join the fight against women abuse. She called for the abolishment of cultural practices inimical to the development of women such as female circumcision, early marriage and child labour.
Dr Rabiatu, a Senior Lecturer, at University of Ghana, was speaking at the Third Annual Regional Conference of the FOMWAG, sponsored by Zoomlion Ghana Limited on the theme: “Exemplary Muslim Woman”, at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.
She said the Federation sought to support women empowerment to reduce illiteracy among them and improve on their living conditions. Dr Rabiatu said FOMWAG has acquired land at Achiaman near Amasaman for the construction of an Islamic educational complex for girls. Sheikh Ishaak Ibrahim Nuamah, Theologian and Educationist, advised women to be more interested in the education of their children rather than the acquisition of wealth. Mrs Isabella Gyau Orhin, Communications Manager of Zoomlion, said the Company was happy to be associated with efforts aimed at promoting the welfare and development of women. Hajia Fatimat Yasmeen Appiedu, Ashanti Regional President of the Federation, called on FOMWAG members to unite and work hard towards the protection of the rights and freedoms of women. She appealed to all Muslim women to join the federation.
