The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, has embarked on a road safety sensitization exercise in Koforidua, to ensure that drivers and passengers on board moving vehicles, wear seat belts.
On Thursday, April 24, a team of MTTD officers led by the Eastern Regional MTTD Commander, Police Chief Superintendent Samuel Larbi, engaged drivers at the central business area and the main lorry park on how to wear seat belts and their importance in the event of any accident.
As part of the exercise, drivers without seat belts in their vehicles were asked to park their vehicles, while those with faulty seat belts were cautioned and asked to rectify the anomaly.
C/Supt Larbi, who briefed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the exercise, explained that, apart from drivers, all passengers were required to wear the seat belts for their safety, adding that, it was the drivers’ responsibility to ensure that passengers wore the seat belts.
He pointed out that, most drivers feigned ignorance of the law which regulates the wearing of seat belts, while some intentionally prevented their passengers from wearing them in their vehicles, with the excuse that they would wear out.
That, he said, was unacceptable, and cautioned drivers to ensure that passengers on board their vehicles used seat belts because the MTTD was poised to enforce the law.
