MTN completes 21 days of Yello Care Staff Volunteer Program

MTN rounded off its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care employee volunteer programme which saw employees from Ghana and 21 other operating countries give back to their communities, under the theme “Investing in Education for All.”
As part of activities marking the 2015 21 Days of Y’ello Care, MTN Ghana staff volunteers undertook educational projects countrywide, including basic literacy programmes for over 500 female head porters (“Kayayei”) at Madina Market in Accra, and for market women in Takoradi, Mankessim and Koforidua.
Volunteers also provided basic training on internet configuration for about 1,000 students in select public schools across the country. Other volunteers provided training in presentation skills and in the use of PowerPoint and excel software.
The team also donated thirty two computers to select Senior High Schools and provided ICT training for teachers to enhance the teaching process.
In response to flood and fire disasters that hit Accra and parts of the country on 3rd June, staff volunteers immediately redirected sections of their programme line-up to support flood and fire victims in Accra. Activities included, donation of relief packs & blankets to flood victims, blood donation to support health care delivery to victims and a clean-up exercise to clear up the Odawna area around Circle in Accra.
Commenting on this years’ Y’ello Care programme in Ghana, the Acting CEO of MTN Ghana, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, reiterated the importance MTN ascribes to giving back, and said that the support provided by MTN staff volunteers is another avenue towards fulfillment of MTN’s mission to brighten lives.
At the official close of activities, Paul Norman, MTN Group Chief HR and Corporate Affairs Officer, said, “We are hopeful that the employees’ volunteer activities will have a positive impact on the lives of learners and educators in our markets. By leveraging our strengths in technology to enhance education, MTN employees are contributing towards creating a lasting impact in our communities.”
The 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign is an annual employee volunteerism initiative launched by MTN Group in 2007. The campaign is aimed at encouraging MTN staff to participate in Community Service for 21 days each year in June.
