Accra, Nov. 2, GNA – Members of Parliament on Tuesday expressed worries over delays in the payment of their salaries and allowances for the month and called on the Minister of Finance to intervene in the matter.
Mr Norbert Awulley, NDC-Builsa South, who brought the matter to the attention of the Speaker at the commencement of public business, said it was unfair that work was being piled on them while an important issue such as their monthly salaries had not been tackled.
Mr Kosi Kedem, NDC- Hohoe South; also intervened saying: “Things are very hard for us so the Minister of Finance should do something about the situation. What is happening?”
Mr John Tia, NDC-Talensi, who also caught the Speaker’s eyes said he had taken the trouble to find out from the Accounts Office in Parliament and had gathered that they were now about to send cheques to individual banks, however what was left was for the Finance Ministry to release funds to Parliament.
Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC-Wenchi West, expressed surprise that the Government had been open with information that revenue targets had been exceeded; yet they were unable to pay salaries.
He said MPs were already grappling with problems over the state of their real salaries, an issue, which was still outstanding. “Our condition is precarious. How can a soldier march on an empty stomach?” he questioned.
Mr Felix Owusu Adjapong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, said he was in contact with the Accounts Office and that the situation would soon be remedied.
