Motorbike accidents increase in Western Region

The Western Regional Police Crime Officer, Mr. James Kofi Abraham, has expressed worry about the increasing spate of motorbike accidents in the region.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi on Monday that motorbike accident cases were being reported to the Police every week.

Mr. Kofi Abraham noted that motorbike riders rode carelessly without wearing helmets and meandered through heavy traffic at top speed, and called for strict enforcement of motor and traffic laws.

He expressed delight over the passage of a legislative instrument by Parliament banning the use of motorbikes popularly called “Okada” for business.

The crime officer appealed to Ghanaians to abide by the new legislation to reduce the number of motorbike accidents.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old pillion rider, Peter Somiah, died when the motorbike he was ridding ran into a KIA taxicab at Sefwi-Krokokrom in the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipality of the Western Region.

The Sekondi Police told GNA that the deceased was sitting behind George Okyere who was ridding the motorbike from Sefwi-Boako to Sefwi-Dwinase.

The police said on reaching Sefwi-Krokokrom, a taxicab stopped suddenly and the motorbike which was behind it, ran into the vehicle.

Mr. Okyere, who sustained injuries, was treated and discharged, but Somiah died after he was admitted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.**
