More calls for reduction in tariff increases

Koforidua, June 11, GNA – The New Juaben Municipal Council of Labour has added its voice to the numerous appeals to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), to reduce the recent tariff increases on Electricity and Water.

At a meeting in Koforidua on Thursday, members of the council said they were not against upward adjustment on electricity and water, but the magnitude of the increase was too high. The members observed that the present tariff increases would cripple many small scale businesses as well as industries if nothing was done about it.

Members of the council indicated that they would support any tariff increases, which takes into consideration the purchasing powers of workers. Later in a four-point resolution, which was signed by Mr Seth Okyere-Dankwa, Eastern Regional Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), members called on the PURC to reduce the tariff increases and also the “Life line of 0-50 should move to 0-150”.

The resolution urged the government to use the subsidy of GHC 49,000.000 to support the utility companies to service their machines. The resolution further urged that there should be no tariff increase on water since that increment was unjustifiable. 11 June 10
