Monumental Projects for Obuasi

THE ADANSI West District Assembly (AWDA) is to embark on monumental projects to be funded from its share of mineral royalties.

Following the decision, traffic lights might soon be seen dotted at some vantage points along the streets of the mining town of Obuasi.

The ?300 million project is to be funded from the assembly’s accumulated royalties.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Joseph Boampong, who disclosed this intention of the assembly, said the house is also considering using part of the funds for the completion of a market and a school at Fomena and Dompoase respectively.

The Minerals Commission has just released a total of ?1.1 billion to AWDA.

The amount, which represents 5 per cent of the assembly’s share of royalties, is for the last quarter of 2000 and the first half of 2001.

The assembly, according to the DCE, had previously received ?66 million for the first quarter of 2000.

“We want to use our share of royalties solely for monumental projects” for the benefit of the entire district.

Talking about Obuasi roads, the DCE disclosed that the project has been awarded on contract under the Urban V project.

An Accra-based contractor has won the bid to construct 2.3 kilometres of the Obuasi roads.

The project begins as soon as the funding agency approves contract specifications, Boampong told the Chronicle.
