Ministry engages communities to end gender violence

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in partnership with the Danish government are working on a number of social intervention projects aimed at ending sexual and Gender based violence in Ghana.

The projects would ensure that such abuses such as sexual assaults are reduced to the barest minimum while promoting equality among the sexes is facilitated.

Mr Samuel Kyei-Berko, Resource Person for the project was speaking at a community durbar at Daboase in the Western Region.

A programme dubbed:” Engaging Men as Change Agents in Ending Sexual and gender –Based Violence,” was also organised in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis to raise the consciousness of men towards the laws that sanctions sexual and gender violence. .

Mrs Nana Yaa Amua-Sekyi, Regional Director of Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice said the Children’s Acts and Provisions in the Chapter Five of the 1992 Constitution protect the rights of persons.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nana Asomaning in Charge of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of Ghana Police Service said the increased number of cases involving abuse in domestic relationships especially against women and children are worrying.

He said crimes such as defilement, rape, incest, indecent assault, non-maintenance of families, forced marriages and child trafficking should be reported to the law enforcement forces as soon as practicable.
