The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Layea Afotey Agbo has urged staff of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to be punctual, proactive and hardworking to ensure that they use their time at the office productively. Afotey Agbo, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency noted that the work of the Assembly is very critical and that it requires that they re- position themselves to offer pragmatic support to government to meet the demands of the citizenry.
He stated that, their continuous stay in office as a political party and administrative heads will depend to a large extent, on how they are able to meet their targets as contained in the performance contract and that they need to work as a team with a purposeful approach to achieve their aims as an Assembly and as a region.
He, however, cautioned that the Assembly would not tolerate workers who do not want to cooperate with it to achieve its objectives, saying “We will not tolerate and compromise on anything that has the tendency to derail our efforts of achieving our targets.
“As a political party in government, they have four (4) years under normal circumstances to rule, but as we are already aware we spent eight (8) months of our tenure in court to determine our fate, which many will think they have been in office for two years”, he noted.
He encouraged all heads of department to live by example to inspire their subordinates. He also hinted that revenue mobilization is one of the challenges confronting the assemblies, which mostly rely solely on common fund for their development projects, thus any delay in the district assembly common fund affects projects documentations as well.
He urged the assembly not to depend only on common fund, but come up with innovative ways to generate enough funds to enable them provide the needed social and economic infrastructure for the people living in their jurisdiction. Afotey Agbo made the disclosure when he met with tribal heads and workers of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly over the weekend.
Touching on security, he said it is very dear to government, saying the recent breakthrough in combating crime at the high seas and on the land attests to these facts. “I urged the Assembly to support the security agencies in performing their duties to continue to protect the territorial integrity of the country, lives and properties”, the Regional Minister said.
He encouraged the Assembly to remove all unauthorized structures in the municipality, especially those on water ways and roads to ensure that sanity prevails in the area.
