Agona Nsaba (C/R), March 4, GNA – Mr. Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, has commended the chiefs and people of Agona West and East Municipal Assemblies for their unity and understanding during the division of the District into two new Assemblies.
He stated that, development could not thrive in the wake of conflicts and chaos among the citizenry, especially when new districts were being created to fast track the slow pace of development in the area.
Mr. Adjei-Darko said this when he inaugurated the newly created Agona East District Assembly at Agona Nsaba in the Central Region at the weekend.
He lauded the chiefs and opinion leaders for the matured way in which they handled the siting of the District Capital at Nsaba, the newly created district Assembly.
The Minister stated that the people of Agona Nyakrom also protested at the announcement that they needed another district in addition to the two existing ones, but the matter was resolved amicably for peace and tranquillity to prevail.
Mr. Adjei-Darko said the initiative by government to create new districts was excellent and assured the people that President J. A. Kufuor would not hesitate to create another district for the people of Nyakrom and other towns when the need arose.
He urged the chiefs and people of the newly created districts to accept the decision of the President to enhance their welfare and promote development.
The Minister called on the Chiefs and people whose districts had been thrown into confusion as a result of the location of the new district capitals to take a cue from the people of Agona.
Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, Member of Parliament (MP), for Agona East said Agona was separated from the Effutu District as far back as 1972 and that had brought enormous development to the town in the areas of education, health, good sanitation and poverty reduction.
He praised the chiefs for their unity and understanding during the siting of the capital at Nsaba, adding that, there was the need for constant communication between them and the administrators of the District Assembly to give a firm foundation for the newly created district.
He urged the farmers, artisans, businessmen and women in the newly inaugurated district to pay their taxes so as to generate enough revenue to complement the funds from the central government.
Mr. Agyabeng said he and Mr. Samuel Kweku Obodai, MP for Agona West would ensure that new districts were created when necessary to promote the decentralization policy and bring governance to the doorstep of the people.
