MiDA supports 124 communities with potable water

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has provided 124 communities across the country with potable water to enhance their livelihood.

This came in the form of mechanized boreholes, small-town water systems and extension of pipe-borne water.

Mr Martin Eson-Benjamin, the Chief Executive Officer of MiDA, said this when inaugurating one of the small town water systems and two six-unit classroom blocks at Apaa, near Agona in the Sekyere South District.

The project was implemented under MiDA’s rural services development project, which spanned five years.

Mr Eson-Benjamin said they have also embarked on a 70.3 kilometre water extension project in the Tamale Metropolis, and this would benefit communities in the Savelugu-Nanton and Tolon-Kumbungu Districts as well.

He said water and sanitation remained important factors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and MiDA would therefore mobilize the necessary resources to develop these sectors.

He said apart from the water systems the project has refurbished and built new schools in 214 communities.

Mr Eson-Benjamin praised the United States Government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation for making funds available in support of the country’s socio-economic development.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, in a speech read for him said the government would work hard to fight poverty and encouraged the community to take good care of the amenities.**
