Saltpond (C/R), Oct. 31, GNA – Nana Attapim Kweenu VIII, a sixty-seven year old chief of Woraba, near Cape Coast, was on Monday elected Presiding Member of the Mfantseman District Assembly. Nana Kweenu, known in private life as, Mr John Essuah-Mensah, a retired Banker and Mankrado of the Nkusukum Traditional area was elected unopposed.
But when the District Electoral Officer called for balloting to ascertain the popularity of the Presiding-Member-to-be among the members he polled 66 votes out of the 72 member assembly, comprising 48 elected, 21 government appointees, the District Chief Executive and two Members of Parliament who did not have voting rights. In an acceptance speech, Nana Kweenu called for a united front among members to push the District forward.
He said income generation would be his priority area since 93money is the determining factor in all activities=94 of the Assembly. Mr Kwaku Aboagye, District Magistrate swore him into office. Earlier, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing had inaugurated the Assembly on behalf of President John Agyekum Kufuor.
