Mayor of DC visits Kumasi

Kumasi, May 10, GNA – Mr Anthony A. Williams, Mayor of Washington DC, USA, on Wednesday led a high level delegation to Kumasi as part of a four-day visit primarily to establish a sister-city relations with Accra.

Mr Williams who was also accompanied by his wife, Diane, his daughter, Yaa Asantewaa and Mr Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Mayor of Accra, paid a courtesy call on Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive and Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister.

Madam Appiagyei expressed enthusiasm about Mr Williams’ visit and stressed the need for the two sister-cities to foster good fraternity with the view to accelerating socio-economic development. She was hopeful that the visit would not only promote cultural exchanges between the two cities but also facilitate other areas of development.

Mr Williams commended the people of Ashanti for their sense of hospitality and hoped that the relationship between the two cities would promote growth in education and other areas of socio-economic development.

Mr Boafo lauded the Mayor for his high respect for tradition and customs of the Ashanti, which prompted him to have named his daughter after Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the great Ashanti woman warrior who fought the British in 1900.

The Regional Minister used the opportunity to extend special invitation to the Mayor of the Washington to attend Yaa Asantewaa festival of the chiefs and people of Ejisu to be held on August 10 this year.

Mr Williams and his 29-member entourage also visited Bonwire, which is noted for kente weaving and Ejisu, the birthplace of heroine Nana Yaa Asantewaa and pay a courtesy call on the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.
