Man who attempted to kill Mahama finally gets his freedom

Charles Antwi, the man who was once jailed 10 years for attempting to kill President John Mahama, has finally regained his freedom.

The 37-year-old man is to be released today December 30, 2016 from the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations where he has been since August 2015.

Charles Antwi, who was charged for possessing firearms without lawful authority, pleaded guilty to the charge with explanation, and was convicted on his own plea in late July 2015.

The man who hails from Diesoabaa, in the Brong Ahafo Regi, was on Sunday, July 26, 2015 found in the premises of the Ringway Gospel Assemblies of God Church, Osu, fidgeting on a seat he was sitting with a locally manufactured pistol and two rounds of ammunition.

He later confessed that he had wanted to kill the president at Church so that he would become the president of Ghana.

He was jailed by an Accra Circuit Court days after the incident, However, the jail term was quashed after an Accra High Court judge in a certiorari order ruled that Antwi, who has been declared mentally unstable after medical examination, should be taken to the Psychiatric Hospital for treatment.

Antwi was therefore placed in the custody of the BNI to enable him to undergo treatment at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

A human rights lawyer and counsel for Charles Antwi, Francis Xavier-Sosu, who appealed to set aside the sentencing of Antwi, confirmed to 3news.com today that his client would be released later today as free man.
