Kumasi, Aug. 21, GNA – A 50-year-old mason at Brofoyedru near Kumasi has been sentenced by a Kumasi circuit court to 300 months in jail for defiling and impregnating a 14-year-old girl. Issaka Moro pleaded guilty.
The court heard from Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei that the victim, who had been living with the grandmother at Brofoyedru, was sent to stay with the elder sister at Kentinkrono. Some months after joining the sister, she was sent away and a female teacher accepted to accommodate her. Police Chief Inspector Baffour-Kyei said about a year on, the teacher was transferred by her employers and this compelled the victim to return to Brofoyedru.
Unknown to the victim the grandmother had long moved out of the town and therefore she went to Moro who accepted her to his house. Moro took advantage of the girl’s situation and sexually abused her, resulting in pregnancy. Police Chief Inspector Baffour-Kyei said an elder sister of the girl got wind of this and reported the matter to a Kumasi FM Radio station.
The Manhyia Division of the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) on hearing of the case arrested Moro. Moro admitted the offence but alleged that the victim was neglected by the family who accused her of witchcraft. 21 Aug 09
